sometimes when you style an editorial pages get cut, reshoots are requested. edits happen-it's normal.  this shot didn't make it to the dress to kill shoot i did for their winter issue but i love it so much i wanted to share it.

X-MAN | fiasco editorial

a few weeks ago i did a men's creative shoot with photographer dan lim. our objective was to do something that wasn't too edgy but commercial friendly, with an editorial twist, for our books. i think i was crazy for doing this shoot on the very same weekend i was styling for dress to kill magazine, but because i did this shoot on the very same weekend i was styling for dress to kill magazine i had more clothing options to chose from.

our model was sutherland's xander budnick, one of the sweetest models i've worked with. i do find that male models in general are easy to work with but on top of that xander was very laid back and comfortable in whatever i put him in (like the baseball cap that was a bit too sung or my vintage boy london watch, fitted for my wrist, that he made it fit on his. total trooper! i loved his "make it work" attitude).

we did a total of seven looks that day but i have learned from experience to never shoot your favourite look first. let the first look be a "throwaway" meaning a look you're prepared to part with and edit out. sometimes the model has to warm up a bit in posing and understanding the direction that is being asked of them. this was the case with this shoot. not that xander wasn't skilled, because his posing was on-point, like, j.crew-stylish-commercial-effortless-happy-breezy-you-make-this-look-easy on-point, but it wasn't the direction for this particular shoot. thankfully i had the swipes i collected for reference on my ipad and i described the desired body language and facial expression as emoting a "sexy beast" attitude, like i'm-handsome-i-know-it-as-i-stand/sit/crouch-in-some-nice-threads-looking-like a sexy beast. and xander gave just that. every time i saw a shot on the screen that i liked i would just refer to it (or  to him, rather) as "sexy beast".

and that would be another reason why i enjoyed working with xander that day: he first gave catalogue but he is equally capable of giving editorial and he handled the art direction of the photographer and the stylist that day without ever getting frazzled. the end resulted in an approachable editorial with some edge that got picked up by fiasco. yay!

MODEL WATCH | lauren english

last season i had the pleasure of working with model lauren english for VAWK's spring/summer 2013 runway presentation at world mastercard fashion week. as fashion week in toronto draws near again and the wish list is revisited to cast the fall/winter lineup of beauties, there is a chance that lauren may not be available. why? because she rocked the runways in paris fashion week for designers like céline, paco rabanne and loewe, opened for acne, closed for maison martin margiela, had a semi-exclusive for balenciaga, not to mention an exclusive in new york for alexander wang. i'm not shocked by her success (just look at her! those cheekbones...) but i was shocked to find out that VAWK was the only one to book her last fashion week!

well good on us for booking her when we did (and while we could). i can't wait to see where lauren's career takes her.

TARGET | spring flyer

it's not very often that i post about the catalogue or e-commrce that i style for. most of the time it's because i do so much of it that i forget to look out for the final image, not only to see the end result but also to add to my book! thankfully i caught the page that i styled for target when in was in minneapolis last month.

the trip to get there was bananas. flights kept getting cancelled, i would get moved to another flight only for it to be cancelled or delayed; it was a nightmare. though i was to fly out on sunday to begin working on monday i actually never made it to minneapolis until monday afternoon. yeah.

thankfully my nightmare trip was no indication of how my week would be. it was nothing but good times, a great crew and good product to work with. i got a whole page to myself, which was awesome, and it turns out that they liked me enough to book me again, yay! fingers crossed this trip will be a lot more seamless than last time...

SPRING CLUTCH | 1883 magazine editorial

last month while styling an editorial photographer joseph saraceno and i decided to do a mini creative shoot on the side to update our books. we had the time, we had great product and one can never have too much new work in their books, published or otherwise (of course we did not use the same items that we already photographed for the other editorial - that would be a no-no). as with any creatives i always like to try and see if it can get published. there are countless publications, both print and online, that are always looking for submissions. london-based 1883 magazine ended up publishing our spring clutch story and they also published a beauty story joseph shot too. it's not our first time being in 1883; we once did a fashion editorial on a skeleton that they loved enough to print, but we were too late so it was published online instead.  i'm glad that 1883 picked up our work again and hopefully there will be more of our work, online and even in print, in the future.

CUTTING EDGE | dress to kill magazine

the spring issue of dress to kill magazine is out! actually, it's been out for about 2 or 3 weeks but i'm just getting around to posting about it now. i've been procrastinating. sorry.

the theme for this season's issue of dress to kill magazine was futuristic and minimal. since my styling preference with accessory editorials leans towards the "more is more" taste i did find this story  to be a challenge, even more so than the le rouge est le noir story from winter. choosing only 3 items that compliment and match each other while balancing and arranging them on the geometric backgrounds was like putting together a puzzle. in the end, photographer joseph saraceno and i created some fantastic images that the magazine loved. the fashion contacts  that i work with also loved it and gave me great feedback. one emailed me stating "tricia!! that made my week.", which in turn made my week.

MY FAVOURITE THINGS | sweet leaf bath co.

i've changed up my personal care regimen somewhat recently and have been trying to use more natural products.  i've been using kiss my face conditioner for my hair, i've been using olive oil  to moisturize my skin and hair and castile soap to cleanse my skin and hair. once i find something that i love i tend to stick to it and often do not open myself to try out new things but there was one day when i discovered sweet leaf bath company.

i stumbled upon sweet leaf via a post on hip & urban girl's website about their winter beauty round-up where they listed a lip balm in a 100% compostable eco tube. they had me at compostable-how could i not give it a try? i ordered the lip balm along with some soaps which lead to my order of their shea butter which lead to my order of their scrubs and i have been ordering from sweet leaf ever since because i have been loving every product i have tried from them.

their products are handcrafted in small batches using pure, organic and fair trade certified ingredients; they're hand blended with pure essential oils, preserved using natural methods; there are no petroleum-based ingredients, sulphates, detergents, synthetic preservatives, colours or fragrances.  and they're canadian! i love to support canadian.

below are some of my favourites that i continually order on a regular basis.

beeswax lip balm in a 100% compostable tube.

shea butter, unrefined, not bleached and in a compostable container.
it offers natural sunscreen protection equivalent to an spf15.

this java bean scrub is fantastic. filled with dead sea salts, organic fair
trade coffee beans and a lot of other nourishing goodness.
the best part is if you use this in the shower there is no need to use
lotion after because it leaves your skin perfectly moisturized.

it's hard to choose one favourite soap because all of them are great.
and all of them are free from synthetic fragrances, dyes and additives.

you can find sweet leaf bath company products at select shops and organic supermarkets across canada. you can also buy their products online (and they accept paypal!) at sweetleafbath.com

IN MEMORY OF | annabel tollman

on june 7th, 2013 the fashion world learned that stylist annabel tollman passed away in her sleep. she was in her late 30's*.

annabel was best known for her red carpet styling of celebrties like scarlett johanson, liv tyler, mariah carey, among others; she was also known for her ability to dress curvy bodies just as well slender ones. she has worked at wallpaper* magazine, was a fashion director of interview magazine, worked as a stylist and spokeswoman for eBay fashion, and was woking on her own bravo reality series. annabel was also brought on by pink tartan's kimberley newport-mimran to style her spring summer 2013 collection.

it's sad that someone of annabel's talent is gone at such a young age, especially when there was so much more to conquer. she can still be remembered professionally through her works and personally through her social media pages. get to know annabel.

*there is no clarity on her age. several different site have listed her age as 36 or 39.

i am a huge fan of niki & lola jewelry. ever since i was introduced to their line at their breakfast media launch i knew i needed their pieces in my life; i even wanted to buy some of their jewelry right then and there! instead, i waited patiently until their trunk show to buy three rings from them, which i wear on a daily basis. being such a fan i was more than ecstatic to be brought on board to style their spring summer lookbook. since i've become friends with angie tingas and mike proteau of niki & lola, and with joseph saraceno shooting (my photog bestie) this shoot barely felt like work!

so have a look and remember, all pieces are available for sale online at nikiandlola.com

i can never tire of this song nor can i tire of this video, even seven months after its release. solange's wardrobe for losing you is full of colour, print, texture and fun; i immediately became obsessed with the styling and wanted to know who was responsible for it. his name is ty hunter and he dressed solange in looks from suno, kenzo, diane von furstenburg, opening ceremony, j.crew and asos. he did an excellent job in making solange looks just as dapper as her sapeur co-stars.

ALDO X YORKDALE | new look

back in june i was invited to check out the new look of aldo's renovated flagship store at yorkdale mall. i was already excited to see what was in store; i was just at their head office the week before using my off-figure/still life styling skills to set up their fall/back-to-school style guide for their website pages. there was talk that there would be the aldo logo integrated into the interior design and i was really curious to see the results.

the new aldo store front is bright and inviting with large windows; displays are set at just the right height that your view isn't obstructed of what's inside. shoes are no longer just lined up on shelves or tables but are thoughtfully grouped together - shoes and bags are grouped by trends on displays that are easy to navigate around throughout the store. the accessories section is as large as their stand-alone accessory stores; the bag wall looks like an art installation; even the sale sections have a bit of a facelift with neatly merchandised shelves and graphic sinage.

the new appearance definitely makes the store more fun to shop and the spacious layout gives you lots of room to do so. if you haven't already, head out to yorkdale mall and check out the new aldo.

the summer issue of dress to kill magazine is out! i had the opportunity to style a travel themed accessories editorial with photographer joseph saraceno. i know i may have said this before about other shoots but this one was really tricky; trying to fit carry-on luggage into a shoot mainly comprised of shoes and small bags was no easy task but we did it and we made it work. and i am quite happy with the results!

STYLING TIPS | stylist's own

$
0
0
i'm sure you've seen the credit "stylist's own" or even "customized by stylist" in a magazine or two before. stylist's own refers to items that are owned by a stylist, it can be from their personal possessions  or it can be from a collection of props. along with using items from your personal collection, customizing these items are also a great way to add a unique touch, even if it's just a small one, to a shoot. in the end you have an article of clothing, an accessory or jewelry that you won't find in every other editorial.

and it doesn't need to be just a vintage hat or some vintage jewelry. you can make your own pieces and change appearances of clothing. create your own nose rings; add shoulder pads to a garment to change the shape; take a sweater and turn into a head wrap. if you have sewing skills you can make something from scratch. there are countless possibilities. often times a stylist's own contribution is the result of not being able to find what is wanted so instead it's created or inspiration struck on the spot to make something new.

below are a few examples of my stylist's own creations and contributions. i'm also planning an upcoming shoot in which i will have a very large portion of the wardrobe be customized by me and some of my own props added. it will be a challenge but the results will unique and i'm looking forward to that!

alter ego editorial for FILLERmagazine:

i made earrings, a nose ring  and a stacked ring out of wire and taped the model's fingers,
football player style, using black masking tape.

test shoot, anna by owen bruce:

i used a vintage kangol that i purchased years ago. can't even remember
where it's from, it was that long ago.

black & white by lily & lilac:

i have quite a large collection of glasses and sunglasses and it keeps getting
bigger. i buy them cheap and take good care of them so that i can get multiple
uses from them.
*tip: pop out the lenses from glasses if you need to reduce glare;
pop out the lenses from sunglasses to turn them into regular frames.

a glitch in the matrix editorial for FILLERmagazine:

i added shoulder pads to this chanel dress giving it a more extreme silhouette to
better go along with aesthetic of the rest of the shoot.
i think i ended up using two sets.

frances by felix wong:

my own collar tips and my own belt. i credited them according to where i bought
them because they were still available for sale or similar items were available.

geek chic editorial for strut magazine:

since this editorial was more beauty focused all items used were props/stylist's own.
the sunglasses are my own (lenses popped out); i cut off the sleeve of the shirt and frayed the edges and
the suspenders are my own (prop).

ida editorial for let them eat cake magazine:

i made the black thigh high leggings myself and the ring is a chinatown find for 5 bucks. both came in very
handy for this shoot because my attempts to pull from the area showrooms (this was shot in new york) fell
through. all i was left with were hot bathing suits from aqua di lara and some frighteningly expensive unique
leather pieces from lost art. make due with what you have and make it great. the rings and leggings helped.

test shoot, jeannine by mckenzie james:

the bag is from my own collection and so is the bangle. both are vintage.
both i don't really wear myself anymore but i will never part with.

dehli 2 dublin video "tommy":

kytami (violinist) is wearing a vintage club monaco sweatshirt that i cut
up for her. she loved it so much that i let her keep it in the end.

zöe bridgman for women x women exhibit 2009:

the belt is vintage. i actually borrowed (raided)  this one from my younger sister's closet.

solar flare editorial for 1968 magazine:

i hand stitched the pearls onto the bra. the pearls were leftover from my years in design school,
or maybe from even before then when i would add custom touches to a lot of my own clothing.

x-man editorial for fiasco magazine:

the rings on his fingers are my own and i used safety pins to form the letter "X" on the baseball cap, 80's style
(you know, when we would safety pin EVERYTHING to make it cool).

indian summer editorial for strut magazine:

i have since cut down on this "specialized" technique but i use to always cut
fingers off gloves. always. sometimes all the fingers, sometimes just the thumbs;
i would try different combinations with each pair. now i just buy fingerless gloves
and will often reuse them.

KRIS NATIONS | jewelry

i tend to get emails from pr companies about the clients they represent, emails for potential blog posts or even magazine editorials. i'm not quite sure how it happened but i've been receiving emails not only from pr companies in canada but from all over the u.s. and even england. i tend not to use any of the recommended clients for editorials because shipping gets really expensive and i won't blog about an item unless i have sincere interest in it.

and then there was kris nations jewelry.

mix and matchable, also stackable jewelery in cute packaging (i'm a sucker for packaging), that's eco-consious (made form earth's existing metal supply), and would work perfectly with my collection of jewelry i wear daily (if i have room on my fingers, though i love the other items too, like their initial necklace).

you can shop the collection online; if you live in the states then you can even get free shipping on orders over $100. but don't worry canadians, kris nations jewelry is available here too. in toronto you can find it at elle hardware and elevator retail; for all other parts of canada, visit their website for more information.

last year la carnita presented uno, a one-night-only showing of works by street artists accompanied by live sets of music by a variety of djs and mexcian cuisine by la carnita (of course). i didn't know much about the event at the time but what i do know is that i should have attended. my twitter and instagram timeline was flooded with pictures of the event that had me wishing i was there.

this year for dos i made sure to mark it on my calendar. there were artists from all over the world presenting original works of art, superstar djs and a street food menu not only provided by la carnita but also big star out of chicago.  all artwork that night were available for sale and i saw some red dots on a few pieces, barely an hour into the event. and if you didn't have the cash to buy the original pieces a few of the artists had poster reproductions for purchase too.

i had a great time at dos and i look forward to what la carnita will have in store next year for tres (i'm guessing that will be the name of the next one). below i've included some pictures of my favourite pieces that night. for a full listing of all the talent that participated and their links, have a look at the website here.
