STYLING TIPS | taping shoes
as an alternative to masking tape i use acrylic adhesive* to protect the bottom of the shoes for photo shoots. trace out the bottom of a shoe to create a template (either use your own shoe or use pencil when drawing the template to avoid marking the shoe accidentally) and label them left and right. after applying them to the sole trim off excess with tailor snips, never scissors, to avoid damamging shoes. because the acrylic is clear you don't have to worry about ugly masking tape being visible in shots and therefore creating less post-production work for the photographer or retoucher. if you prefer masking tape then there are various colours available. try finding one that best matches the sole of the shoes. on that note: never use masking tape on shoes with a leather bottom! the adhesive from the masking tape will remain on the soles. also use caution with shoes that have painted soles; take care that the colour is not removed when peeling off the tape.

image from launchingsuccess.com |
another tip: never have the model walk around in the shoes; have them change in and out of them on set. though you have to take extreme care with shoes borrowed from stores the same care and respect should be taken with sample shoes, regardless of the condition you got them in. if you can, return the samples in even better condition than you received them in.
did you damage a shoe while shooting? let the lender know. if the damage is minor, especially on a sample, you may not be required to do anything. if the damage is on a retail shoe and it's a damage that can be fixed (resoling, new heel tab, etc) you may be required to only pay for the repair. either way, be honest. you don't want to build a bad reputation in the industry as a stylist that destroys merch.

WHAT I STYLED | in 2012
it's the beginning of a new year so that means it's time for me to recap and look back at what i've accomplished, styling wise, in 2012. this is only my second "what i styled post" since i didn't have my my blog straightened out in late 2011, which is a shame because i really enjoy having a post like this to document my work by year. nevertheless, here it goes for 2012.
2012 was full of variety, and variety is what i like which i why i style both fashion and still life. i didn't do as many editorial jobs for fashion BUT i did do some damage on the still life editorial side, which is awesome. often, a lot of my still life work is for e-commerce and catalogue, which is great because they pay really well but it's nice to have the extra creative fun with editorial.
early in the year i did a lot of styling for amazon and myhabit in the united states. in march sunny debuted his diffusion collection VAWKKIN at toronto fashion week and did a casting amongst his fans to model it on the runway along side his main collection VAWK. april was the last time i styled for zellers before they took their last shot ever in october, closing their doors to make way for target. in june i got to work with felix for what would be the last time before he moved to new york; june is also when i officially relaunched my blog under my new last name. in august i FINALLY got to work with photographer owen bruce. october was a busy month: my first still life editorial for dress to kill magazine, styling for VAWK & VAWKKIN for fashion week and styling a nail polish story for plaid magazine for what turned out to be their last year in business. the year ended with two additional still life editorials for dress to kill magazine, a great finish to the year.

ECCO | ss13 preview
the spring summer 2013 collection would be my third ecco preview that i have attended. in all three previews i have always seen styles that i like for myself but never got around to purchasing a pair, at least until last month. the shoes i included in my Christmas wish list? i bought them. the patent ones too. i have yet to wear them out though due to all this cold white stuff on the ground.
spring summer is no different in regards to items i want to add to my own collection, like the cuno mocassins (i think it's time i overcame my fear of wearing white anything). this collection presents a range of shoe and bag styles in easy to wear colours like faded pastels, earth tones and a few brights. keeping with their design and technology philosophy that “the shoe must follow the foot” ecco offers shoes that are lightweight, comfortable and heels that are not to high (no heel is over 90cm). they are the only major shoe brand to own and manage every step of the shoemaking process, they own their own leather factory and they even sell their leather to other well known labels and companies such as alexander wang, louis vuitton, coach and bmw.
though i was provided with the lookbook i've decided to share the pictures i took that day; the preview was so well presented and the merchandise was so well grouped and propped that i had to ask who did the merchandising and display. erin monaghan, part of the ecco team, did a very good job.

HOW TO WEAR | haider ackermann high waisted trousers
high waisted trousers can sometimes be tricky to wear. it's definitely a look that is best suited for those with proportioned or long torsos to prevent the wearer from looking short waisted. it's also a style best avoided by those with a fuller bust line to prevent the appearance that your chest is sitting on top of your pant waist (unless you're wearing a really great minimizing undergarment). this how to wear post is inspired by one of my sisters who is always able to take any item, no matter how casual or dressy, and put her own spin on it to create a look that makes you think twice about the limitations of a garment.
high waisted trousers don't require that all tops must be tucked in. these haider ackermann's have a flat enough front that allow blouses to lay flat without bulk. keeping the colour palette monochromatic or similar tonal value can help the wearer look taller (good for short girls like myself). to make the pants look more casual for a dress down option but still look polished wear with a stylized tee tucked in (or in this case a lace print sweatshirt), classic jewelry with a twist and the ankle zip of the trouser undone over stylized high tops.

HARD DAY'S WORK | editorial
fall 2011 was the year i decided to part from my role as fashion editor at FILLERmagazine; i was part of the team since it's inception in september of 2009. between that new change and trying to get my new last name to stick (it's way harder when your name is your business) i completely forgot to post my final four editorials that i did for FILLER.
yikes. did i really not post four stories? shame on me. i feel like i did post some of them but they may have gotten lost in the transfer of blogs. in any case, here's number one of four, a hard day's work.
this shoot is my second story that i conceived and did the fashion direction (the first one being the trend report). we shot this on canada day at my in-law's place. thankfully there weren't a lot of neighbours home because i'm sure they'd wonder why there was a half naked model sprawled on the front porch (they live in the suburbs). the idea was to have a glamorous looking girl, decked in cute swimsuits and gorgeous jewelry doing yard work contrasted against an old fashioned home. all the props used for the shoot belong to my in-laws, even the old school lawn mower. this was by far one of my most favourite shoots to date.

WISH LIST | motorcycle jacket
i've always wanted a leather motorcycle jacket. i've owned a leather blazer, i have a leather bomber that i love but i'm still searching for that perfect looking biker jacket. one that will fit perfectly off the rack would be an impossible find and an unrealistic expectation especially given my shorter frame and curvier shape; tailoring after a purchase is inevitable. i'm also really particular about the appearance of the hardware-it must be silver, on the obnoxious tip, and almost garish. i don't want ties, i don't want studs or spikes (surprisingly because i love them when used with restraint) and i don't want it cropped or very fitted.
below are various colours and cuts of motorcycle jackets that i just love. in a perfect world i would own every single one. in a perfect world i would also be able to afford every single one. the first two acne jackets seem to fit my ideal but the rita (first one) is just a touch too boxy, and i don't fancy the small pocket detail on the mape (second one) but only as a first jacket for me to own. i think the best solution to my moto conundrum is to have a talented designer friend do a custom biker for me...

THE TEAM | dr. martens ss13 lookbook
i know that models have to inject some acting skills into their work in front of the camera but there was something about the models in the dr. martens' spring summer 2013 lookbook that seemed different. they seemed exceptionally comfortable posing together. after checking the credits i understood why: it's ash stymest and his new bride maille doyle-stymest.
i bet that this was one of the easiest gigs for them to date. how hard could it be to gallivant around the city getting all cozy with your significant other decked out in dr. martens shoes and clothes?

WONDERGIRLS | like this
i am obsessed with this video from the wondergirls and i do mean OBSESSED. ever since i first saw them perform on so you think you can dance back in 2009 i've been keeping my eye on them. (i believe that they are still) currently based in new york and are working with american artists (like akon for their song like money) but it's their song like this that has got me hooked.
i bought the song, i watch the video often but i especially watch the dance practice video almost once a day. it's addictive and the choreography is so fun-do that 10 times in a row and you've got yourself an excellent workout. there's even been flashmobs in paris, moscow, melbourne, vietnam and indonesia (all part of a competition, that the vietnamese group won, but it gives you an idea of their reach and the diversity of their fans).
their original video has over 15 million views; their dance practice video, over 5 million. watch it and you'll be hooked. if you're not hooked, it's ok, we can still be friends.

WORKING MAN | editorial
as you know, from my previous post, i'm playing a bit of catch up with some editorials that i forgot to share at the time of their release. post two of four features rookie blue's travis milne.
for this shoot i had requested that travis grow in some facial hair to help separate him from his clean cut character officer chris diaz; it seemed to do the trick because there were a few times people didn't recognize him in my book and thought he was just another handsome model. and did i mention that he is model proportions? his height, clothing size and even his shoe size are all sample sizes so that made my job for this shoot really easy. also making this shoot easy was travis' sense of humour, laid back nature and down to earth attitude.

MY FAVOURITE THINGS | red lipstick
i've never been the biggest wearer of makeup, with the exception of high school me where i would cake it on. the only product i never really leave my home without these days is concealer but as of late i've been wearing lipstick on the regular, specifically red lipstick.
i've always preferred reds that were dark but bright. i used to have the perfect colour from l'oreal's infallible collection, it was a red with just the right amount of a blue undertone, but then they discontinued that shade. i was never able to find another lipstick in that colour so i would resort to layering NARS' velvet lip pencil over revlon's just bitten lip stain, until one day where i decided to wear the lip pencil on it's own. the day i wore dragon girl by itself was the day i received so many compliments on the colour. i always thought that particular shade of siren red was too bright for me but i guess i was wrong (very wrong, according to my makeup artist friend that lovingly threatened me to not mix the colour again).
![]() |
adriana lima wearing a perfect shade of red |
since this awakening i now want to expand on my red lip collection and try other bright shades, even going in the direction of orange (i think that would look totes amaze with my "summer complexion" when my skin turns a darker golden brown). i'm even tempted to revisit other bold colours that i used to wear as a fearless youth. as much as i love NARS and have become a lifer i am not about being exclusive with my makeup relationships; there are many more brands i want to try. my requirements, and i don't have many: it must not be glossy or pearlized, matte is preferred but it can be moisturizing, and it must be long lasting (i don't want to do multiple touch ups through the day). très facile, non? i think so.
below is a collection of various lip colours. a few colours i already own and love like NARS' lip pencils in dragon girl (of course) and bahama (i know it's not red or even an edgy colour but it really is the perfect pink brown). some i'd like to revisit like makeup forever's satin blueberry and satin black lipstick (i wore these colours in high school; i wore electric blue and even dark green as well but have no plans to go back to there). the rest are colours and brands i'd like to try, especially ones from toronto based all-natural lip care company bite beauty.
it's a good thing i have reward cards for the bay, sephora and shoppers drug mart because i will be racking up some serious points with these future purchases.

LADY KILLER | editorial
editorial number three of four from my last days at FILLERmagazine is a menswear story entitled lady killer. shot on location at pie in the sky studios this story went with the issue's fall theme of death and macabre. it was a bit on the morbid side. to this date i'm not too sure on how i feel about the story but i do know that aniya nandy did a a great job with grooming, hair & makeup; marissa schwartz did some very convincing special effects makeup; ms. mary brisbois was an excellent leading lady; the male models were a great supporting cast (and had a lot of fun with the shoot); and dan lim took excellent photos. also, i was quite pleased with my styling.

STYLING TIPS | bulldog clips
(for fashion shoots) bulldog clips are a great alternative to safety pins* which can sometimes leave holes in clothing. get them at any store that carries business supplies and get them in various sizes. use bigger ones for bulkier clothes and for lightweight clothing uses the smaller clips.
additional tip: for really delicate clothing use paper towel in between the clothes and the clip to help prevent any accidental snags.
*if you insist on using safety pins use caution. make sure to position your hand with the garment so in case of a slip, you hit yourself with the pin and never the model. use extra caution when working with kids. also, never, ever use straight pins! those are dangerous and become a hazard to everyone who handles the clothing if the stylist forgets to remove them after a shoot.

MY FAVOURITE THINGS | sweatshirts
but not just any kind of sweatshirt and especially not the kind you work out in. i still would not be caught wearing sweatpants in public (with the exception of checking the mail, which i did today) but recently sweatshirts have become very in style, specifically the adorned type.
patterns, prints and all sorts of embellishments are making these cozy tops look cool with jeans, cute with skirts and workplace appropriate (depending on your workplace it may only be for casual fridays). though i don't own any of the below styles i have already acquired a beginners collection of sweatshirts and i will continue to acquire more until my heart is content (which will be never) or until my closet is full (which may be soon).

A BEAUTIFUL DEATH | editorial
the final instalment of editorials from my last days at FILLERmagazine is one that was shot by the very talented and very popular zhang jingna. this was the second time jingna worked for FILLER. i had first came across her work on model mayhem years ago (i know, mm, but if you dig you find the treasure) and i had suggested that she be contacted about working with the magazine. thankfully she said yes but unfortunately i had to say no about working with her due to another booking i had the only day she was available (I WAS SO BUMMED! #CAPSLOCKNECESSARY).
being the busy woman that she is, constantly travelling for bookings, i was over-the-moon excited that we got her to shoot for the magazine a second time. though i was not the biggest fan of the concept of this shoot there was just no way i was going to miss out on another opportunity of working with jingna. she was an absolute delight to work with, very quiet and down-to-earth. we got along really well. we got along so well that when she was staying in new york for a month she asked me to visit so that we could shoot some awesome creatives together. i couldn't make it work that time but thankfully she is now based in new york so working together in near future is just a 9 hour drive away, or a 1 hour and some change flight-whatever my travelling budget will allow.
