HOW TO SHOP | for sunglasses

sunglasses aren't just for the summer months, they should be an all year-round staple on your face. treat them like any other accessory and have more than one to go with different outfits or moods. for the vision impaired, stick to glasses that have a sturdy frame and take them to a lenscrafters or your local optical and have prescription peepers put in (or if you prefer, find some stylish clip on lenses. they exist).

not sure what frames best suit your face? check out the chart below.

general rule of thumb for frames to look for according to your face shape:

  • oval- lucky you! you can wear almost any shape frame.
  • round-  you can elongate the appearance of a round face by choosing angular frames that have straight up and down sides.
  • heart- balance out a wider forehead and narrow jawline with frames that have heavier detail on the lower part of the rim.
  • square- soften your angular features with frames that have rounder, curvier details on the outer rims.

of course, the above are simply suggestions as no two face shapes are identical and some people  even fall into more than one category of face shapes. other details to consider when looking for frames are the width of the bridge; those with close set eyes may want to look for frames with a wider bridge while those with a narrow bridge (or i've heard it referred to a a "neat" nose) will want to look for frames that have a smaller bridge to prevent them from sliding down the face.

when you go frame shopping, be it for sunnies or regular spectacles, have fun and try styles and colours that you wouldn't think of; you'd be surprised on how many styles you end up liking. and if you're not sure which ones look best on you, ask one of the sales people in store. if you go to an optical only store (versus a department store that sells frames) i find that they are very, very honest with what looks best on you.
