HAPPY NEW YEAR | 2014

happy new year! i know i'm 11 days late on the wishes but i have good reason: i just became a new mom! and in fact, he arrived on new year's day. so while the blog posts (have) will slow down they won't stop. i have a commercial that i've styled that i will be sharing in the near future, i've got a nail story that i shot with 2 good friends that i can't wait for you to see and i've got my "what i styled in 2013" post to share with you. i'm also thinking of doing some baby bump related style posts; i had no desire to do my own style posts while pregnant but i have had friends of mine request and suggest i create some maternity entries. i'm still up in the air on that one but we'll see.

in the meantime, thanks for sticking around for another year! i'm looking forward to what 2014 will bring and how things will change for me now as a new mom. i still plan on doing more head-to-toe posts (though i may not just feature one brand anymore, i'm thinking head-to-toe now in one trend or theme) and i love doing the nailed posts too (i really can't wait to post the latest story i did) and i'm always thinking of new stories and features i can include on my blog, especial if it's something i can add to my book!

stay tuned for my what i styled in 2014 post next!

WHAT I STYLED | in 2013

another year has passed and it's time for another "what i styled" post. i'll say it again: i'm so glad that i have my blog and my facebook page to help catalogue the work i've done over the years; sometimes i have the memory of a fruit fly so keeping track of the gigs i've worked on would be nearly impossible. below are some of the jobs i was blessed to be booked for in 2013.

J A N U A R Y
gotstyle e-commere
in early (or maybe it was mid) 2013 gotstyle launched their e-commerce site for menswear. i got a chance to style some of the off figure for their launch.

chatting with tricia interview by sunny fong

just like in past "what i styled" blog posts i always include any press/interviews in my round up. i know it's not something i styled but it's about me as a stylist. also, it's always flattering and i'm always thankful to (and humbled by) those that wanted to take the time and interview lil' ol' me

technically, i didn't style the commercial or the clothing for the room in december, it's just the month in which they were released. december is when i officially took my maternity leave and wasn't accepting any bookings (fear of going into labour while on a job). the only gig that i did do in december was another nailed shoot with joseph saraceno and naomi misu on nails, which would have been included in this round up but i loved the results so much that i decided to shop the images to magazines. a publication has picked up the story for their spring issue so you will stay tuned!

ME AND... | sunny fong at the shOws

it's been a long time sine i've done a me and... post. i've actually contemplated getting rid of the category all together and even deleted a few posts when i made the blog move from tricia campbell to tricia hall. this picture here is of (seven month pregnant) me and VAWK designer, sunny fong, at the shOws toronto at their ss14 presentation in the andrew richards design building (amazing space, i almost got married here). cute i may be but photogenic i am not which is one of the reasons why i was going to rid this category all together. this picture though, i quite like a lot. i like my louis vuitton inspired rabbit ear wired head tie from american apparel, my always heavily complimented beckerman heart necklace, my nars lip colour (dragon girl velvet matte lip pencil, it's the best!) and my well loved and well worn pure alfred sung grey sweater that i bought when zellers still existed (*sniff*sniff*). but what i love is that this picture is with my designer bestie who i've had the pleasure of working with for 7 seasons. thanks, sunny, for tagging me on facebook or else i'd never know this picture existed!

HOW TO WEAR | print on print featuring the gap spring 2014

$

i've done how to posts before and i often compose looks from sites like polyvore. as fun as that is i thought it would be more fun, and challenging for me, to create how-to-wear posts from collections of some of my favourite shops and brands or even from lookbook collections i am frequently sent. so my first featured how-to post is how to wear print on print from one of my favourite shops, the gap.

print on print doesn't just mean dots and stripes; don't be afraid of pairing floral with floral and even adding some texture like tweeds. i've created four looks, all featuring gap's box pleat chambray floral skirt. treat the denim skirt like a neutral: go monochromatic in head to toe true blues like look one; casual in a tee and oxfords like in look two (which will look much cuter and more put together with the shirt tucked in); a touch of sporty spice in a bomber jacket with matchy-poo coloured accessories like in look three; and pretty in pinks with some stripes in look four.

the key in all the looks is to keep the accessories simple and to let the prints be the star.

the box pleat chambray floral skirt, $64.95 (available in march) in all looks
1.  printed tweed moto jacket $118 | fitted boyfriend oxford shirt $59.95 | printed canvas oxfords $59.95 | leather flap clutch $39.95
2. floral tee, $26.95 (available in march) | crossbody leather tote $105 | printed canvas oxfords $59.95
3. floral blouson bomber jacket $98 (available in march) | large leather tote $135 | printed pointy flats $39.95
4. floral perfecto jacket $118 (available in april) | fitted boyfriend oxford shirt $59.95 | snakeskin leather ballet flats $39.95 | leather flap clutch $39.95

like what you see? (unless otherwise noted) all items are available now in stores and online at gapcanada.ca

SCENTS OF COLOR | 1968 magazine editorial

the fragrance editorial that i directed is now out in 1968 magazine! i had this idea to have beautiful perfume bottles splashed with coloured liquid. when i told joe, the photographer, about my idea he joked "you should get pregnant more often" because, as the his remark suggests, i came up with this vision when i was pregnant.

i had to do some testing beforehand. food colouring and water alone wouldn't photograph well enough in front of a black background. i tried adding pastry flour to thicken it and to make it more opaque. it worked with the exception that there were little bits of flour visible on the bottle making it appear gritty. so we went with my original idea: add milk. it worked, we just had to make sure to do an excellent job cleaning up the mess after to make sure it didn't smell up the studio! i am very, very happy with the end results and i think joe did an excellent job!

the swim editorial i styled for factice magazine is now up online!

aug 31 edit:
i was in such a rush to post this story that i forgot to give background on it.

ever since coming back from maternity leave, which there really is no such thing when you re self-employed, i've been executing a lot of creative ideas that i've had floating around in my brain. for one, i needed to "get my name back out there" so that people knew for certain that i was back at work and secondly, to freshen my portfolio; after almost a whole year of e-commerce bookings i didn't have much new work to add to my book.

so i've always wanted to do a swim story but wanted to do so in a non-coventional way. after meeting megana callen again at a VAWK casting and seeing her new platinum blonde look i knew i wanted to use her for this story. i loved the idea of having the total opposite model of what is commonly seen in swim stories: dark hair, tanned skin, loads of boobies and then dressed with lots of makeup and big wavy hair . i love that megan has a more editorial shape and usually would not be booked for swim (but she still looked amazing in it). i love that she has more edge (and her septum pierced) and wanted the hair and makeup to reflect that.

i am thankful that mathew guido, aniya nandy and naomi misu came on board to shoot this! check out the results below and view it online at factice magazine.

i've always wanted to do an outerwear story. i've had the idea to do an outwear story for almost 3 years but either didn't have the time to execute it or a publication to pitch it to. i was so happy to hear that remark magazine was interested in my vision and ended up publishing it in their september/october issue! i was also happy to work with the talented team of adamo de pax (who seems to say yes to all my ideas and therefore seems to understand how my busy mind works), roger medina as he was in town that weekend (you may remember him from "canada's best beauty talent" hosted by coco rocha), karima sumar on nails (who provided lots of entertainment because she's hilarious) and let's not forget about the lovely clhoe heath, a vawk girl that i was happy to work with in editorial (this makes two so far! first was megean callen).

i can find inspiration for creatives shoots from anywhere. social media is a great source of ideas and it was via instagram that i found an image that inspired the idle hands beauty editorial i styled and directed for fault magazine.

IDLE HANDS | FAULT MAGAZINE

model herieth paul (@heriethpaul) posted and image of herself on instagram with the hand of a white male. i thought this was a brilliant idea! like a high fashion united colors of benetton ad. i wanted to do something similar, but with two women, for a beauty editorial that would be accessorized with jewelry and great manicure looks.

photo via herieth paul's instagram

for the model i knew i wanted a redhead and i knew i wanted to work with elise gathchsene, so that was easy. she photographs well, moves well and has great hands. all i had to do was find a black model with the same attributes. because of the nature of this shoot i knew i would have greater success in booking a second model if i used the same agency. elmer olsen models has a great roster of women and they helped me find miller who was a perfect compliment to elise.

on the team we had the talented adamo de pax for photography. i approached him about this idea at the end of our de-coated shoot for remark magazine. for nails we had the talented naomi misu. ever since she became my go-to girl at tips nail bar we've been doing some great work together. for makeup we had patrick rahme. i got to work with patrick once before on a creative and i remember him being not only talented but an absolute gentleman and the day of the shoot he was no different. for hair we had the talented (and quite hilarious) cia madarello. cia was highly recommend by susana hong; hong is the one of my dearest friends that helped me get my styling career going and is known for being very honest. and assisting me that day was my sister nicole campbell. nicole was also acting as a baby sitter for my son who i had to bring with me on the shoot that day; she was awesome.

as for the jewelry i reached out to local designers and well as companies that were available globally because i wanted this story to be published anywhere. and here we are! thank you to everyone involved and thanks especially to fault magazine for publishing the story.

HARD DAY'S WORK | editorial

fall 2011 was the year i decided to part from my role as fashion editor at FILLERmagazine; i was part of the team since it's inception in september of 2009. between that new change and trying to get my new last name to stick (it's way harder when your name is your business) i completely forgot to post my final four editorials that i did for FILLER.

yikes. did i really not post four stories? shame on me. i feel like i did post some of them but they may have gotten lost in the transfer of blogs. in any case, here's number one of four, a hard day's work.

this shoot is my second story that i conceived and did the fashion direction (the first one being the trend report). we shot this on canada day at my in-law's place. thankfully there weren't a lot of neighbours home because i'm sure they'd wonder why there was a half naked model sprawled on the front porch (they live in the suburbs). the idea was to have a glamorous looking girl, decked in cute swimsuits and gorgeous jewelry doing yard work contrasted against an old fashioned home.  all the props used for the shoot belong to my in-laws, even the old school lawn mower. this was by far one of my most favourite shoots to date.

editorial number three of four from my last days at FILLERmagazine is a menswear story entitled lady killer. shot on location at pie in the sky studios this story went with the issue's fall theme of death and macabre. it was a bit on the morbid side. to this date i'm not too sure on how i feel about the story but i do know that aniya nandy did a a great job with grooming, hair & makeup; marissa schwartz did some very convincing special effects makeup; ms. mary brisbois was an excellent leading lady; the male models were a great supporting cast (and had a lot of fun with the shoot); and dan lim took excellent photos. also, i was quite pleased with my styling.

X-MAN | fiasco editorial

a few weeks ago i did a men's creative shoot with photographer dan lim. our objective was to do something that wasn't too edgy but commercial friendly, with an editorial twist, for our books. i think i was crazy for doing this shoot on the very same weekend i was styling for dress to kill magazine, but because i did this shoot on the very same weekend i was styling for dress to kill magazine i had more clothing options to chose from.

our model was sutherland's xander budnick, one of the sweetest models i've worked with. i do find that male models in general are easy to work with but on top of that xander was very laid back and comfortable in whatever i put him in (like the baseball cap that was a bit too sung or my vintage boy london watch, fitted for my wrist, that he made it fit on his. total trooper! i loved his "make it work" attitude).

we did a total of seven looks that day but i have learned from experience to never shoot your favourite look first. let the first look be a "throwaway" meaning a look you're prepared to part with and edit out. sometimes the model has to warm up a bit in posing and understanding the direction that is being asked of them. this was the case with this shoot. not that xander wasn't skilled, because his posing was on-point, like, j.crew-stylish-commercial-effortless-happy-breezy-you-make-this-look-easy on-point, but it wasn't the direction for this particular shoot. thankfully i had the swipes i collected for reference on my ipad and i described the desired body language and facial expression as emoting a "sexy beast" attitude, like i'm-handsome-i-know-it-as-i-stand/sit/crouch-in-some-nice-threads-looking-like a sexy beast. and xander gave just that. every time i saw a shot on the screen that i liked i would just refer to it (or  to him, rather) as "sexy beast".

and that would be another reason why i enjoyed working with xander that day: he first gave catalogue but he is equally capable of giving editorial and he handled the art direction of the photographer and the stylist that day without ever getting frazzled. the end resulted in an approachable editorial with some edge that got picked up by fiasco. yay!
